About Us
SpartanTutors' owner Anthony Graybosch has taught and tutored since 2002. Anthony was inspired to start SpartanTutors when, while delaying, for five minutes, replying to an email from a student seeking help with MCAT physics in order to (shamefully) finish eating a sandwich, he received a phone call from the owner of a larger test prep company offering him the opportunity to help that same student, who had just committed to the larger company for twice what Anthony would have charged her to work with him. The memory of the ruined sandwich interval informs SpartanTutors' business model - subject matter and standardized exam experts who work with us are paid 85% of the revenue associated with their labor, and fees are at a level appropriate to the highest quality teaching but without middle-men, administrators, or institutions inserted into the teacher-student or teacher-parent & student relationship.
Part of teaching is just sharing joy in knowing and in being able to learn and know more, i.e. simply helping students put their own strength into their own service. That part is central but is as self explanatory as any other clean joy.
Another part of teaching is disaster prevention. Anthony sees the high school and university environment as offering tremendous potential benefits to students, but also as containing traps that should not, but do, exist. Much as a large efficient train system with two sets of financial books is better than an honestly run, small, incompetent transit system, traps that merely annoy a little, or steal a little, while directing a bit of energy into sometimes crucial endeavors like research, are, while not our style, things people could argue for; but the overall competitive landscape has, for a lot of reasons, become fraught. To help students do well, and hopefully avoid traps that do more than just annoy, Anthony makes certain SpartanTutors only contracts with teachers and tutors who are student-centered, egalitarian, and competent in the foundations of their disciplines.
